According to the general rule, one can apply for the Armenian citizenship if he/she is over 18, is legally capable, during last 3 years resided in Armenia on the legal bases /holds Armenian residency/, can be expressed in Armenian and is familiar with the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.

Ethnic Armenians can acquire RA citizenship in a simplified manner, i.e. without permanent residence in the Republic of Armenia for the past 3 years and without the requirement of knowing Armenian.
If the applicant is in Armenia, then the application of getting citizenship should be submitted to the "Passport and visa office"(Police of the Republic of Armenia), if he/she is in another country, then it can be submitted to the Embassy and consulate of the Republic of Armenia of that country.
In both cases, the application should be submitted personally with the following documents:
• Questionnaire;
• Passport and its copy;
• 35 x 45 mm 6 photos (colored);
• birth certificate and its copy;
• A document confirming the Armenian ethnicity;
• receipt of payment of state fee

How does the applicant prove the Armenian Ethnicity?
According to the legislation any of the following documents proves the Armenian origin of the applicant:
a. A baptism document which contains information about the origin of the applicant or his/her parent. This document can be issued by the competent church authorities and should be legally confirmed by the Armenian consulate.
b. a document of nationality issued by the competent authorities of a foreign state and approved by apostille or consular ratification (national identification card, extract from the birth certificate, etc.).
c. other documents proving the applicant’s Armenian ethnicity.
d. a birth certificate or other identifying document containing information on the origin of the applicant’s parent, grandfather, grandmother, brother or sister. If the applicant wants to prove his/her Armenian origin using his/her half-sister’s or half-brother’s identifying document, then it can serve as proof only if the ethnicity of the half-sister or half-brother is based on the common parent's origin. All documents can serve as proof of ethnicity if the applicant provides with them the documents stating their family ties as well.
